Nepalese citizens has taken the territorial dispute of the Kalapani territory with India to social media in the form of an online protest. On 2nd November 2019 Indian Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah proposed the Jammu and Kashmir reorganization bill to the upper house of the bicameral parliament of India which saw the constitution of a large of Kashmir into two Indian Union Territories under the name of “Jammu and Kashmir” and “Ladakh”. Following this the Indian governments Press Bureau released a map of India which also indicated that the Kalapani territory of the Darchula District of Nepal listed as a part of the Pithoragarh district under the Uttarakhand state of India.
The online protestors used the hashtag “BackOffIndia” to highlight on their belief that India is meddling in their domestic affairs and taking over their land. However the roots of this protest goes back to 2015 when the landlocked nation of Nepal was subjected to a trade blockade by India. According to a report by the Indian Express, the blockade was the result of the Nepalese Parliament refusing to demands by the Indian government to amend certain articles of the constitution.
The current online protest was joined by Pakistani citizens who shared the same opinions of the aggressive policies by India. Allegations of interference in domestic affairs by Indian authorities has been made by Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan and Maldives. Though any international body is yet to comment on these allegations, India continues to claim more and more parts of the Asian Subcontinent as theirs.
