Controversial anti-Malaria drug Hydroxychloroquine came in to the spotlight following US President trump and Indian PM Narendra Modi’s support of the medicine as a “cure” fore COVID 19. Following President trump’s revelation that he has been taking Hydroxychloroquine tablets to defend himself from the COVID 19 pandemic, scientists has been warning world leaders of the dangers that this practice.

In a recent study published in the medical journal “The Lancet”, researchers found conclusive evidence that COVID 19 patients who were treated with Hydroxychloroquine were found to have considerably higher rates of mortality and risks of heart arrhythmia. In the study, data from more than 96,000 COVID 19 patients from 671 hospitals were analyzed of which 15,000 patients were treated with Hydroxychloroquine.

It was found that 1 in 11 patients from the test group who did not take Hydroxychloroquine died while 1 in 4 patients died after taking Hydroxychloroquine. The data also revealed that patients who took this controversial drug also had a high chance of developing heart arrhythmias, a potentially fatal heart condition.

According to the data from the study, patients who only received Hydroxychloroquine had a 34% increase in risk of death and a 137% increase in risk of developing serious heart arrhythmias. A second set of patients who were treated with both Hydroxychloroquine and antibiotics had a 45% increase in risk of death with a 411% increase in chance of developing serious heart arrhythmias.

Thought scientists has warned world leaders and medical practitioners of the dangers of using Hydroxychloroquine as a cure for COVID19 even prior to this study, several world leaders chose to ignore the warnings and give the green light for the use of the drug . In Maldives, President Solih and his Foreign minister Abdulla Shahid procured 50,000 units of Hydroxychloroquine to be used in the battle against the COVID 19 pandemic, choosing to ignore scientific consensus following Modi and Trump.
