Executives at the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism has stated that they are ready to re-open the state for tourism under the new Standard Operating Procedure which has also been allegedly replicated by the Seychelles and Sri Lankan Authorities. An exotic video was released earlier this week to announce the reopening. The video which highlights the beauties of the Maldives islands was released on the 8th of June 2020, depicting the incumbent Tourism Minister Ali Waheed enjoying the natural wonder of the sunny side of life.

However, the Standard operating Procedure(SOP) drafted by the Ministry of Tourism has been under the limelight following criticism by both the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) and the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO). Both groups have accused the ministry of drafting the SOP without consulting the industry stakeholders, with the MATATO alleging that the current SOP by the Ministry of Tourism is “unwelcoming” and that the current SOP will undo 40 years work to create the Maldivian tourism brand.
