According to the latest information from the Election Commission of Maldives, the ruling party Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has lost more than 1,000 members while nearly the same number of people has joined the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) bringing their membership to 37,144 people.

Prior to the COVID 19 Pandemic, the ruling party MDP alleged that their membership drives will increase their numbers to a 90,000 while many individuals of the public complained of them being added to the ruling party’s registry without their consent. In recent interviews, President of the Election Commission, former MP Ahmed Shareef stated that the commission is working on amending the required laws to prevent the addition of members without their consent. He has also stated that the new amendments will allow the commission to suspend political party’s which operate outside of the boundaries of the law.
