High level ruling party MDP activists in the Addu atoll has been allegedly arrested in a counter-narcotics operation by the Maldives Police Service. According to the Commissioner of Police, the operation is being conducted by  the Drug Enforcement Depart was working in coordination with the Drugs Intelligence Unit, Divisional Intelligence Department, Marine Police and the Southern Division of the Police service.

At this point it is unclear on the exact number of people that has been arrested but sources indicate that several individuals including a ruling party MDP candidate for the Addu city council along with Shamweel Gasim (Bonda), a player for the national football team.

It is reported that several individuals have been arrested along with a high number of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Suspected individuals arrested in the operation are reported to have an extensive history of crime.
