Calls to boycott French products in the Maldives has gained momentum in the Maldives following French President Emmanuel Macron’s comments against Islam and Muslims. Following the terror attack in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, French President Emmanuel Macron made several comments accusing Muslims of being separatists and a threat to French heritage and culture.
Moreover, he encouraged the depiction of the controversial Charlie Hebdo cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohamed (PBUH), following which several government building were lit up with the cartoons.
French President Emmanuel’s comments has been condemned and labeled as Islamophobic by several international organizations and world leaders including Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. The movement in the Maldives is being led by the twitter account “@BanFranceMV”. According to the handle, a protest will be held near the Islamic Mosque this Friday.
Several prominent businesses and personnel has joined this movement including former Elections Commission Member Ahmed Fayaz Hassan. Famous local restaurant “Coffee and Steak Bar” has also joined the movement with a post on their Facebook page which states that the restaurant will boycott all French products until the French President Emmanuel Macron apologizes for his comments.
