The Progressive Congress Coalition has launched its internal election to elect members for its Steering Committees. According to the Secretary General of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Mr. Mohamed Shakeel, over 1,100 applicants will be contesting for the steering committees with the 55,000 members of the coalition voting for the Steering Committees in their respective constituencies.
PPM Vice-President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also commented on the election. Speaking on Channel 13, the Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that “What we want is what is best for the country. And due to the current state of affairs the people have no confidence in the current government. But what we do brings hope to the people. The Steering committees were designed in such a way to facilitate the opposition’s work throughout the nation, in effect bringing hope to the citizens of this country.”.
According to the PPM, the opposition alliance’s Steering Committees will be elected in all inhabited islands including the 4 cities and their wards. The election of the Steering Committees is expected to be one of the largest internal elections by a political party in the Maldives. The opposition alliance consisting of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC) has experienced an increased support by the public with thousands of new membership applications while the ruling coalition continues to dwindle in numbers and support.
