Former President and current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has alleged that China is asking for the full repayment of loans taken from China. Speaking at a rally held to commemorate the 2nd year of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s presidency, former President Mohamed Nasheed used a local proverb to make the allegations against China.
According to former President Mohamed Nasheed, China is forcing the Government of Maldives to sell its assets to repay the loans. However, China has maintained that it is open to reschedule all debts incurred by the Maldives. Former President Mohamed Nasheed however, claims the contrary stating that in the past months the government has had to repay over USD 83 million this year alone.
He also made a strong remark that the Government of Maldives will not repay the loan taken to construct the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge until a proper survey of the quality of the bridge is conducted. Resident Chinese Ambassador Zhang Lizhong is yet to comment on the subject but in the past months former President Mohamed Nasheed has made claims on Chinese developed infrastructure which were repeatedly refuted by the Chinese ambassador.
