The Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions has decided to remove Elections Commission’s Vice-President Ahmed Akram following allegations of sexual harassment.

At a meeting held by the committee led by Chairperson MP Rozaina Adam, the committee investigated that allegations against Elections Commission’s Vice-President with testimonies taken from the members of the commission, staff and the victim.

Ahmed Akram who is currently serving his second term at the Elections Commission was the former Deputy Secretary General of current ruling party MDP before joining the Elections Commission during President Abdulla Yameen’s administration. The decision to remove him has spark public debate over his potential replacement and whether foul play is involved as the Election’s Commission is set to hold the Local Council Elections in March 2021.
