Opposition Vice-President MP Ahmed Shiyam has condemned President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administrations treatment of women and the use of excessive force on peaceful gatherers. Following the use of excessive use of force by the Maldives Police on well-wishers gathered to see the departure of former President Abdulla Yameen after his hearing, several women were seriously injured including a Council Member of the Progressive Party of Maldives.
In his tweet MP Ahmed Shiyam stated that “While the whole world is working to eliminate violence against women, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, its ministers and some of the Police are harassing and attacking women.”. The tweet was followed by images of the injured women who are currently seeking further medical attention.
Amongst the injured includes elderly women.
The attack on the women comes just a day after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the initiation of 16 days of activism to eliminate violence against women. Maldives Police Service is yet to comment on the issue but videos are circulating on social media depicting male Police officers manhandling females gathered near the Republic Square.
