Opposition MP Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has stated that real press freedom is a measure of tolerance of dissent. He made this statement in a tweet made today on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.
In his tweet, the opposition Vice-President and the Guraidhoo Constituency MP stated that real press freedom is a measure of tolerance of dissent and that it is not just an evaluation of an annual rise or fall on a global classification system. His statement reflects on the current state of affairs for Maldivian journalists who are exceedingly often targeted and attacked when executing their duties as journalists, while the Press Freedom Index of the Maldives continues to achieve better ranks annually.
He continued on to thank the journalists and media houses in the Maldives for “keeping the fourth estate alive under these trying circumstances.”. MP Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon’s tweet also featured snippets from CIVICUS report on the police crackdown on protestors and media.
