President’s Office Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez has stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is open to changing the government to a parliamentary system. Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez made this statement at a press conference held at the President’s office last night.
Speaking at the press conference, Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez stated that though President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is open to changing the governing system, it is not a priority for him at this time.
This comes weeks after Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed publicized a message stating his interest in changing to a parliamentary system and becoming the Prime Minister. Stating that he “don’t want to be sidelined anymore”, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed’, request to change to a parliamentary system was met with mixed receptions from his fellow party members.
Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez reiterated in his press conference last night that it is not a priority for the President at this time to change the governing system, but to fulfill his presidential campaign pledges. However, he did indicate that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be open to changing the governing system to that of a parliamentary system. He stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is open for debate on the issue if any stakeholder is interested in changing the system.
Speaker Mohamed Nasheed who proposed the idea to change the system, proposed on cancelling the 2023 Presidential Election and to change the system to that of a parliamentary system in January 2023. Even though majority of the top brass of the ruling party are in support of changing the system, the public constitutional referendum taken in 2007 was overwhelmingly in support of the Presidential system with 62.04% voting for it while only 37.96% voted in support for a parliamentary system.
