Following the implementation of a total travel ban from India by the Australian Government, the Australian Cricket players currently stuck in India are expected to fly here, to the Maldives to escape from the raging pandemic in India. The surge in COVID19 has forced the Indian Premier League to go on an indefinite suspension after several teams came up with positive cases.
According to ESPN, close to 40 Australians are now stuck in India after Australia implemented a total travel ban from India. “A mass exodus of Australian players, coaches and support staff to the Maldives is the expected remedy to the dilemma created by the postponement of the 2021 IPL and the current closure of the Australian border to citizens currently in India during its rampant COVID19 outbreak” reports ESPN.
It was also revealed that several players including Pat Cummins, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Ricky Ponting ,Simon Katich and commentator Michael Slater are already in the Maldives to escape from the raging pandemic in India.
The Australian Government’s decision to close off its borders to all passengers from India came after the sudden surge in COVID19 cases in India with over 14 consecutive days of new daily cases reaching over 300,000. As the nation struggles to care for the over 20 million covid19 patients, several countries including China has taken the initiative to provide aid to India.
