Opposition VP Mohamed Saeed: Suppressing free media is a sign of weakness and cover-ups.

Opposition Vice-President Mohamed Saeed has criticized the President’s Office’s decision prioritize selective medias for the President’s Press Conferences in the future.

This comes following President’s Office Chief Communications Strategist Ibrahim Hood sent a message to the media WhatsApp group stating that “in all future press conferences, we will prioritize questions from mainstream media.”.

MP Mohamed Saeed stated that the President’s Office must know that there are no legal mechanism to categorize or rank media in this country.

He also stated that suppressing free media is “a sign of weakness & cover-ups”.  MP Mohamed Saeed further stated that the people deserves to know  “how the nation’s sovereignty is compromised”. He also argued that the people deserve to know on the live lost in the pandemic due to negligence of the government.

MP Mohamed Saeed’s comments comes while public outrage is targeted at the current administration over the death of 10 year old Fathmath Mishka Mohamed due to a delay of 2 hours 26 minutes in providing ambulance service. This is further exacerbated by the growing concern of Indian influence in the Maldives, after India unilaterally declared the establishment of an Indian consulate in Addu city, Maldives.

Body of a 13 year old found in Hulhumale.

Body of a 13 year old boy has been found in Hulhumale district of the capital city.

According to the Police Media Official, Police received a report in relation to an alleged case of abduction of a 13-year old boy, last Sunday. And amid further investigation of the case, police discovered the dead body of the child in the early hours of Tuesday, said Police.

The Police Media Official informed that two suspects; a 17 year old male and a 27 year old male have been apprehended in relation to the case.

The case is currently being investigated as a serious case said Police.

President Solih departs on unofficial trip to Dubai.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has departed on an unofficial two-day trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) this Monday to attend the funeral of his younger brother, Ahmed Mohamed Solih, who passed away, early Monday morning.

According to the press release published in the President’s Office website, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be returning to the Maldives this Wednesday.

54 year-old Ahmed Mohamed Solih was being treated for cancer in Dubai, according to local news sources.

Opposition council member Ahmed Nareesh elected as the Deputy Mayor of the capital city.

Opposition PPM Council Member Ahmed Nareesh has been elected as the Deputy Mayor of the capital Malé city.

Ahmed Nareesh, who represents the Maafannu Medhu Constituency won his seat in the Malé City Council in the last Local Council Election after competing against a ruling party candidate. He, along with twelve  other opposition candidates won their seats by a landslide victory.

Today’s election was held between the council members of the Malé City Council. Ahmed Nareesh received 12 votes while his opponent received 7 votes.

Ahmed Nareesh is the host of “Madiseela” and its spiritual successor “Hajam” which has been recorded as the most popular nightly shows in the Maldives. A former solider, Ahmed Nareesh has been active in the political scene as a council member of the Progressive Party of Maldives.
