Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance meets with the Malé City Council.

The Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance (MOPA) has met with the Malé City Council (MCC). According to a statement by MOPA, Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, several councilors and administrative staff from the MCC met with MOPA, which was represented by its founder Thoriq Ibrahim, its executive committee and several members.

In the meeting, MOPA assured that it would provide full cooperation to the MCC. Mayor  Dr. Mohamed Muizzu commended MOPA’s work in safely repurposing and recycling plastics, and noted on the importance of such NGO’s in protecting the environment and maintaining the natural beauty of the Maldives.

Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also noted that even in his campaign he pledged to create “Chaalu Malé” (Beautiful Malé) which has been formally adopted as a target of the MCC. He also talked on the role the NGO’s could play in implementing a “Chaalu Malé”.

MOPA discussed with MCC on its current plastic repurposing and recycling program in the Greater Malé city area and on how to successfully continue the program with cooperation from the MCC.

The Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance is the first NGO dedicated to pooling resources to safely recycle and repurpose plastics and to clear the Maldivian oceans and beaches of plastics. Following its inception in 2020, MOPA has an official roster of over 200 partners through which they have managed to safely repurpose, recycle more than 17 tons of plastic.

Fire incident reported again at the Villimalé State Care Shelter.

A fire incident has been reported at the Villimalé State Care Shelter. This is the third such fire to break out at the shelter within the past two months.

According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MND), a fire was reported from the fourth floor of the Villimalé State Care Shelter. MNDF Fire and Rescue Service has put out the fire while no injuries have been reported in relation to the fire.

However, substantial damage was reported to the room where the fire had broken out at around 06:03 am. At this point it is unclear how the fire started but with the previous fire at the Villimalé State Care Shelter, Ministry of Gender and Family stated that it was an act of arson by some of the children at the shelter.

The Villimalé State Care Shelter currently only houses children who are above the age of 13 and under the care of the state.

U.S. Ambassador to the Maldives Alaina B. Teplitz praises painting by Maldivian artist Shimha.

In a tweet made by the U.S. Ambassador today, Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz stated that she was stunned by the painting by local Maldivian artists Shimha.

Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz further stated that she was amazed by the “vision and skill” of Maldivian artists every time she visits the Maldives. She also stated that she was glad that a younger generation is working on keeping the creative traditions alive.

Known for her distinctive water painting depicting scenes from outside the Greater Malé Area, Shimha’s artworks sparks reminiscence and nostalgia on the island life, culture and history Maldivians enjoyed prior to urbanization.

Mayor Dr. Mohammed Muizzu pleads the public to abide rules of the disabled parking areas.

With regard to a social media post by an individual raising concern over others using parking areas designated for people with disabilities, Mayor of Male’ City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu tweeted pleading the public to respect and abide by the rules of the disabled parking.

Tweeting from his personal account on Tuesday, Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that for the community to become civilized, one needs to get civilized by action as well as thinking. He continued on to state that it is really saddening to see general public using slots assigned for disabled parking. In his tweet he pleaded the community to refrain from such acts.

Male’ City Council has been developing parking areas for public. Along with general parking spaces, the city council has been developing disabled parking slots designated for people with disabilities.

Though Sign boards are installed to mark designated parking slots for people with disabilities, several complains have been reported regarding others using these designated parking areas.
