Journalists in fear following alleged death threats by Island Aviation DMD Aishath Jennifer.

Senior ruling party activist and Island Aviation Deputy Managing Director Aishath Jennifer has been accused of making murder threats against “Mihaaru News” journalists.

According to complaints by several local media personnel, Aishath Jennifer had made the threat on Twitter. In her tweet, she questioned whether the “Mihaaru News” journalists would cease publications on the controversial Hate Speech bill when one of them are murdered on the main road of the capital city.

Several journalists have inquired with the Maldives Police Service on whether she has been questioned or arrested in connection with the threats. While the police are yet to comment on the issue, journalists have expressed distress over their safety following the alleged murder threats by the ruling party senior activist.

It has been also reported that the Maldives Media Council would be holding a special meeting to discuss on the issue.

Youths of Gemanafushi initiate cleanup of beaches of nearby uninhabited islands.

The youths of Gemanafushi have banded together to clean up the beaches of the nearby uninhabited islands.  The cleanup initiated with the help of the campaign team for the “Saafu Kandufaru program”.

The program was carried out by the fishermen’s NGOs in collaboration with all the NGOs from Gemanafushi, Ga. Atoll Council and Ga. Gemanafushi Council.

The leading fisherman in the cleanup, Saajin stated that the plastic taken in today’s activity filled up 20 jumbo bags. He also stated that this work would be continued without further breaks.

On this note he explained that a discussion is proceeding on ways to recycle or reuse plastic taken from the beaches.

Net bags have been provided to all Gemanafushi fishing boats and since the campaign was initiated with the aim expanding to the whole of Huvadhoo Atoll, net bags will be provided to all the Huvadhoo fishing vessels as well.

The main objective of the program is for the fisheries industry of Maldives to set an example on the importance of protecting the environment, increasing awareness on the dangers of improper plastic waste disposal and to implement an easy way to discard the plastic waste.

The main partners of this program are Ensis Fisheries, Ugail Foundation and Ga. Atoll Council.

Cyber-Attack Hits Housing Ministry.

It has been reported that the Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure has become a recent victim of a cyber-attack resulting in difficulties providing service to the public.

Since last Saturday, the ministry’s computers have been remotely denied access prohibited and the staffs have been asked to not attend work. However, no official statement has been made from the ministry or Maldives police service.

Previous such cyber-attacks to various government authorities have been noted too. Last year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the website of Health Protection Agency (HPA) was hacked with warnings sent to the system.

SJ construction to sue government claiming unlawful evaluation of three bids.

A major construction company of Maldives, SJ construction has filed a case against the government in regards to three bids.

A public statement was made by the legal team representing SJ Construction, Advocacy Chambers in regards to the case. As per the statement the three bids in question are related to the ongoing works of construction of housing units in Hdh. Hanimadhoo, building of the housing units in Th. Vilifushi and the construction of the Hdh. Nolhivaran Housing Units.

The legal team alleges the bids were evaluated inputting a loss of 21.6 million rufiyaa to the state and the bids were disqualified by the government unlawfully.
