President Solih declares New Normal State in Maldives after 513 days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih informed that Maldives have surpassed the most dangerous days of COVID-19 situation and currently the country is at the “new normal” state. This would be the 153rd day of the state of the public health emergency in the country.

In December 2020, speaking to the local news channel, Rajje TV, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih have said that there is hope of reaching to a solution in the fight against the COVID-19 situation soon.   Last year high ranking officials of the government celebrated the end of the COVID-19 pandemic prior to the advent of the second wave of COVID-19 in Maldives.

Discussions were made in the cabinet meeting regarding the measures against the ongoing pandemic and the enforcement of the vaccination program.

Records show an amount of more than 100,000 eligible citizens that are not fully vaccinated yet and more than 40,000 people have not got their first doze of the vaccine thus far.

Last May was recorded as the period of the worst COVID-19 situation in the nation. Almost 40000 positive cases was recorded in May and the death toll for stood at  over 100. Thousands of patients of positive cases was admitted for care.

Government Extends the State of Public Health Emergency in Maldives until 1st of September.

The Government of Maldives has announced the extension of the ongoing state of public health emergency commenced on 12th May 2020. A press release signed by the Health Minister Ahmed Naseem was publicized on Monday. Health Minister stated that the Director General of Public Health Protection Agency (HPA) have instructed to take special measures to control the ongoing COVID-19 situation as per the Public Health Protection Act.

Cases have declined immensely and the situation in the capital city has improved. However, 13 islands are currently under monitoring status due to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the respective islands.

Currently more than 268,000 people have been fully vaccinated. The government has targeted to vaccinate 90% of the eligible population by the end of August. This would be equal to 50% of the entire population of Maldives.

COVID-19 cases have been observed to be rising in the neighboring nations of Sri Lanka and India. After the ease of lockdown there has been an up rise of tourists travelling to the islands of Maldives.

Government of Maldives secures enough vaccine for the whole adult population.

Government of Maldives has announced the current stock of COVID-19 Vaccine doses is sufficient for the eligible population of the country and that would expedite the process of vaccinating all eligible citizens of the nation.  Adequate vaccine stock has also been sent to all inhabited islands of the nation.

Speaking to the media last week, Spokesperson of Health Protection Agency (HPA) stated they have started receiving the ordered stock of vaccine doses.

In addition to this, Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid has announced the nation is set to receive 400,000 doses of Sinopharm Vaccine from China as a donation. Chinese government has previously gifted a batch of 200,000 doses of Sinopharm to Maldives.
