A fire incident has been reported at the Villimalé State Care Shelter. This is the third such fire to break out at the shelter within the past two months.

According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MND), a fire was reported from the fourth floor of the Villimalé State Care Shelter. MNDF Fire and Rescue Service has put out the fire while no injuries have been reported in relation to the fire.

However, substantial damage was reported to the room where the fire had broken out at around 06:03 am. At this point it is unclear how the fire started but with the previous fire at the Villimalé State Care Shelter, Ministry of Gender and Family stated that it was an act of arson by some of the children at the shelter.

The Villimalé State Care Shelter currently only houses children who are above the age of 13 and under the care of the state.
